French Immersion Vancouver Premiere!

FCCABC is pleased to promote the new Canadian film FRENCH IMMERSION” ! From the makers of Bon Cop Bad Cop” andThe Trotsky”, “French Immersion” is the story of four Canadian Anglos and one New Yorker who come to St. Isidore-du-Coeur-de-Jésus, a remote town in Northern Québec, in order to learn French.

For two weeks the students live with French families, take classes in French, do everything in French – from singing karaoke to go-karting. Think of it as a very strict summer camp for adults, with one rule – NO ENGLISH!  Students who sneak off to speak a little English quickly find out that the whole town is spying on them, “EN FRANÇAIS!” By the time the two weeks are up, neither the students nor the town will ever be the same.
The Vancouver premiere will be on October 13th at The International Village.  But you can take a sneak peek at it here as well as visit the official French Immersion” website for more information.   And stay tuned right here for some of the winning answers to the question “Why is Learning French Important?”. Howard Park Public School’s upper French Immersion students definitely know the answer to that!
***
Also on October 13th, Baron Gallery in Gastown is honoured to be hosting an exhibit of paintings by Montreal automatist painter Pierre Gauvreau and his wife Janine Carreau.  Pierre passed away in April of this year having exhibited for 70 years. He was an active participant in the drafting of Refus Global and absolutely lived to paint.  The works in the show are done in vivid colour, and have appeal for a wide audience. Please visit Baron Gallery’s website for more information on the exibit.

Marie-Eve was also interviewed on Radio Canada Vancouver’s “Le Telejournal” in which she speaks about FCCABC’s 2 years of French promotion throughout western Canada, and Radio Canada Alberta’s “Le café show” with excerpts from the British Columbia Francophone Capsule Series which you can listen to in our Media Podcasts section.

French Connection Culture Association (Bureau du Canada) & Otmane Madrane at National Bank Financial

We are very excited to announce that as of July 1st, 2011 FCCABC is going national! Not only will we be known as French Connection Culture Association (Bureau du Canada) - with offices in Toronto and Vancouver – we are also happy to promote National Bank Financial Group, through the services of French language specialist Otmane Madrane.
National Bank Financial is a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Bank of Canada and has been in existence for 150 years.  It is Canada’s 6th largest chartered bank, with over 30% market share in Quebec and $100 billion in assets managed for over 270,000 clients.
On that note FCCABC is pleased to recommend the services of Otmane (Otto) Madrane a French speaking Investment Advisor at NBF Vancouver.  “French-speaking full-service advisors are in short supply, particularly in Western Canada, and communicating in your native tongue about sensitive subjects like personal finance is extremely important.” Otto can be reached directly at: Otmane.Madrane@nbf.ca
With our new ‘national’ focus, FCCABC is well poised to extend our reach to French speaking communities across Canada. Exciting days are ahead. Restez branchés!

The French Presence in Vancouver: Farewell Meeting May 11th

Old Tremont Hotel - Built in 1887

On May 11th at 7PM we bid adieu to the French Presence in Vancouver lecture series in the historical Tremont Hotel (later named Abrams Block) in Gastown.  Don’t let the English monikers fool you – it currently hosts the Irish Heather Pub and Salty Tongue Cafe.  Although the building was constructed during Vancouver’s early multi-ethnic years, it soon became home to purveyors of French arts and culture. Most significantly, it was the site of the first meeting of the Vancouver French Canadian Association.
Join us as we raise our glasses in memory of the colourful French Vancouverites who came before us, and toast to the rich present and promising future of Vancouver’s French presence in the years to come. Santé!!

French in our Midst

With the French Presence lecture series underway, we are now focused on uncovering and rediscovering the extensive imprint French culture has made on our city.

For example, the Dominion Building with its French classical/second Empire architectural style is not only a provincially designated Class ‘A’ heritage structure, but also a little taste of Paris in this glass of a city.
If you would like to learn more about Vancouver’s French history, we have a few spaces available in our upcoming French Presence walking tour (Saturday April 30th at 10:30AM). For ticket and location information contact: frenchconnection@fccabc.org
